Memes of Pat Cummins, the Australian star who sold for a record Rs 20.5 crore in the IPL auction, take the internet by storm

An important issue was raised by the much-awaited IPL 2023 auction, and the definitive answer is finally available! This year saw the arrival of the much anticipated Rs. 20 crore offer that had been discussed by everybody. In a stunning development on Tuesday, Sunrisers Hyderabad turned conjecture into reality, even though few people thought it was feasible. The 2016 winners signed Pat Cummins, the 2023 ODI World Cup-winning skipper, for a record-breaking Rs. 20.50 crore after a fierce bidding battle with the Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. With this agreement, the Australian cricketer has become the most expensive player in IPL history, breaking the previous record of Rs. 18.5 crore established by England’s Sam Curran in the previous season.

Desis was shocked by the turn of events and left stunned by the rush of memes that accompanied this record-breaking sale. Many people found it ironic that after crushing a country’s ambitions in the WC 2023 final, Cummins rose to become the most expensive player in the Indian Premier League.

The Chennai Super Kings started the bidding for the Australian all-rounder at a reasonable starting price of Rs. 2 crore in the current Dubai auction. The Mumbai Indians moved quickly into the match, raising the stakes to Rs. 4.8 crore in a fierce contest against Chennai. Mumbai ultimately gave up, so CSK could finally have the chance to get their third all-round player. But, RCB arrived just as CSK were beginning to feel victorious after bringing back Shardul Thakur (base price of Rs. 2 crore) for Rs. 4 crore and obtaining World Cup breakout star Rachin Ravindra (base price of Rs. 50 lakh) for Rs. 1.8 crore.

Bangalore surprised everyone by outbidding CSK with a 7.8 crore offer. But Sunrisers Hyderabad, who recently completed a steal of Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka for a base price of Rs. 1.5 crore, became a new competitor. After the tense bidding battle reached a climax, SRH’s bold 20-crore offer caused the crowd to explode in cheers. Even though RCB tried to push itself too far, Hyderabad—and especially CEO Kaviya Maran—came out on top.

Cummins, meanwhile, cemented his place as one of the most expensive players in IPL history for the second time. He was the guy who guided Australia to victory in the World Test Championship, retained the Ashes in England, and subdued a raucous Indian crowd in the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad. At the time of his acquisition by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020, he was the most expensive foreign player at Rs. 15.50 crore.

Among these headline-grabbing trades were the acquisition of New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell by Chennai Super Kings for an astounding Rs. 14 crore, and the signing of India all-rounder Harshal Patel by Punjab Kings for Rs. 11.75 crore.
