In India, the price of gasoline and diesel is determined by a number of elements, including freight costs, value-added tax (VAT), and municipal taxes. Because of this, the rates vary from state to state.

Since May 2022, when the federal government and some states reduced gasoline taxes, the price of petrol has stayed constant.

Every day at six in the morning, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) adjust the retail price of gasoline in accordance with the price of crude oil throughout the globe. Government regulates gasoline costs via excise tax, base pricing, and price limits.

Factors Affecting Indian Gasoline and Diesel Prices

Price of crude oil: Since crude oil is the primary raw material required to make gasoline and diesel, the price of crude oil directly affects how much these fuels ultimately cost.

The price of gasoline and diesel is influenced by the exchange rate between the Indian rupee and the US dollar since India imports the majority of its crude oil.

Tax: Both the federal and state governments impose various levies on gasoline and diesel. These levies may differ from state to state and may have a significant effect on the ultimate cost of gasoline and diesel.

The price of refining crude oil into gasoline and diesel also has an impact on the ultimate cost of these fuels. The cost of refining may vary based on a variety of variables, including the kind of crude oil used and the refinery’s efficiency. The refining process can be costly.

Demand for gasoline and diesel: The demand for gasoline and diesel may have an impact on their costs. Prices for these fuels may rise if there is a rise in demand.
