Nepal Cricket Association Rejects Sandeep Lamichhane Following His Rape Conviction

The cricket governing body of Nepal banned spinner Sandeep Lamichhane on Thursday, after his eight-year jail term for the rape of an eighteen-year-old lady. In response to the news, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) released a statement this morning.

The Kathmandu District Court made the announcement of the ruling on Wednesday. “We inform you that Sandeep Lamichhane has been suspended from any kind of domestic and international cricket activities as he has been convicted and sentenced,” according to the CAN. The 23-year-old was ordered by a single-judge court to pay Rs 2,00,000 in compensation to the victim and to pay a fine of Rs 3,00,000.

“The Kathmandu Post” cited Lamichhane’s attorney Saroj Ghimire as stating that the cricket player “will appeal the decision in a higher court.” The Cricket Association of Nepal suspended Lamichhane as captain after the Kathmandu police filed an arrest warrant for him in September of last year.

He was with the Jamaica Tallawahs, a team in the Caribbean Premier League, but the team discharged him right away. He went back to Kathmandu and was detained there.

But Lamichhane branded the accusations a “conspiracy” and maintained his innocence prior to his detention.

For Nepal, Lamichhane has taken over 100 wickets in over 103 white-ball matches.

In his short time with the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League between 2018 and 2019, he took 13 wickets in nine games.
